God with Us: Joseph's Dream

Matthew 1:18-25; Isaiah 7:14; 2 Samuel 7:12-16 New Testament PrincipleObedience

Joseph sleeps on a mat as a glowing angel speaks to him in a dream.

Mary was engaged to marry Joseph, a carpenter from King David's family. Before they were married, Mary was going to have a baby from the Holy Spirit. Joseph was a good man, and he planned to end the engagement quietly. But an angel came to him in a dream – "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. She will have a Son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins." It all happened just as God promised through Isaiah – "They will call Him Immanuel," which means "God with us." When Joseph woke up, he did exactly what the angel told him. Obedience means trusting God's word and doing it.

Obedience is doing what God says because we trust Him. Joseph obeyed right away because God's word was true, and God was keeping His promise to send Immanuel, God with us.

Christ Connection · Promise

Matthew says Jesus' birth happened "to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet": a virgin's child called Immanuel, "God with us." And through Joseph, Jesus became a son of David, the King God promised. Jesus is God with us, and He promised, "I am with you always."

Matthew 1:1, 22-23; Isaiah 7:14; 2 Samuel 7:12-16; Matthew 28:20

The Big Story · Redemption

God promised David a forever King and promised through Isaiah a child called "God with us." Jesus is both. God came to live with His people to save them from their sins.

God had promised a baby named Immanuel, "God with us." When Joseph woke up, he obeyed right away. We obey God because we trust Him.
