The Parable of the Sower

Matthew 13:1-23; Luke 8:4-15; Mark 4:26-29 New Testament PrinciplePerseverance

A farmer in Bible times scatters seed across a Galilean field with a hard path, rocks, thorns and good dark soil, while birds swoop down.

Jesus told about a farmer who scattered seed on four kinds of ground. Only the good soil grew a big crop. God's Word is the seed, and when we hear it, hold on to it and keep going, God makes it grow in us.

God's Word has life inside it, and God makes it grow. Because He is faithful, we can hold on to His Word and keep going, even when it's hard.

Luke 8:15 BSB

Christ Connection · The gospel

The seed is the word of God (Luke 8:11), and Jesus is the Word who became a man (John 1:14). Jesus also said He was like a seed that falls into the ground and dies so it can grow into many more (John 12:24). He was buried and rose again, and now His life grows in everyone who receives Him (1 Peter 1:23).

The Big Story · Redemption

Since the Fall, hearts have been hard ground, full of rocks and thorns. Jesus came as the Sower and the Seed, and His Word grows new life in everyone who receives it, until the whole earth is His harvest.

Ask, "What's hiding inside all of these?" (Baby plants!) Say, "Jesus told a story about seeds. Let's find out where they grew."
