Eutychus Falls Asleep

Acts 20:7-12; John 11:25; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14; 1 Corinthians 15:20 New Testament PrincipleHope

Brick-built Paul teaches late at night in a lamp-lit upper room while Eutychus dozes in the window.

On the first day of the week, the believers in Troas gathered in an upstairs room to break bread. Paul was leaving the next day, so he kept talking until midnight. A young man named Eutychus sat in the window and fell sound asleep – and fell three stories to the ground. They picked him up dead. But Paul went down, hugged him and said, "Don't be alarmed! He is still alive!" Everyone went back upstairs, ate together and talked until morning, and they took Eutychus home alive. Jesus is the resurrection and the life, so we have a living hope.

Hope is being sure that God will keep His promises. Because Jesus rose from the dead, we have hope that He will raise His people to live with Him forever.

Memory verse

“Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies."”

John 11:25 BSB

Christ Connection · Promise

Eutychus came back to life, but one day he would die again. Jesus rose to never die again, "the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep" (1 Corinthians 15:20). Because He lives, "God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him" (1 Thessalonians 4:14). That's our living hope.

John 11:25; 1 Corinthians 15:20; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14; 1 Peter 1:3

The Big Story · Restoration

Sin brought death into the world. Jesus beat death when He rose, and one day He will make all things new and raise His people to live with Him forever.

Bible story 6 min

It was the first day of the week. The believers in the city of Troas met together to eat and pray. They met in a big room on the third floor.

Paul was with them. He was leaving the next day, so he had a lot to say. He talked and talked, all the way until midnight!

There were lots of lamps in the room. A young man named Eutychus sat in the open window. As Paul talked on and on, Eutychus got very sleepy. His eyes closed. He fell fast asleep.

The rest of the story, discussion questions, songs, Live It and prayer are for members.
