The Rooster Crows: Peter Denies Jesus
Luke 22:31-34; Luke 22:54-62 New Testament PrincipleRepentance

At the Last Supper, Peter said he would never leave Jesus. But Jesus said that before the rooster crowed, Peter would say three times that he didn't know Him. Jesus also said, "I have prayed for you." That night, Jesus was arrested. By a fire in the high priest's courtyard, Peter said three times, "I don't know Him!" The rooster crowed, and Jesus turned and looked at Peter. Peter went out and cried hard. But Jesus had already prayed for him. Peter turned back, and Jesus forgave him.
When we fail, Jesus doesn't give up on us. Repentance means being truly sorry and turning back to Jesus, who prays for us and forgives us.

Christ Connection · God’s love
Jesus prayed for Peter before he fell, and the Bible says He still prays for His people: "He always lives to intercede for them" (Hebrews 7:25). When we sin, "we have an Advocate before the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous One" (1 John 2:1). Like Peter, we can turn back to Him and be forgiven.

The Big Story · Redemption
Even Jesus' closest friends failed Him. But Jesus came to save sinners, and He prays for His people, forgives them and turns them back to Himself.

At the Last Supper, Peter promised to go with Jesus to prison and death. Jesus told him that before the rooster crowed he would deny Him three times, and also said, "I have prayed for you." That night, by a fire in the high priest's courtyard, Peter denied Jesus three times. The rooster crowed, the Lord turned and looked at him, and Peter wept bitterly. But Jesus had already prayed for him, and after the resurrection He forgave him. Repentance means turning back to Jesus when we fail.

Jesus warned Peter that Satan wanted to sift the disciples like wheat, and that Peter would deny Him three times before dawn. But He also told Peter, "I have prayed for you," and spoke of his return as certain. Peter's bold promise collapsed by a courtyard fire. When the rooster crowed, the Lord turned and looked at him, and Peter wept bitterly. That godly sorrow led him back to Jesus, who appeared to him after rising and restored him. Repentance is turning back to the Savior who never stopped praying for us.
