The Golden Calf
Exodus 32:1-35; Exodus 34:1-8 Old Testament PrincipleRepentance

While Moses was on Mount Sinai with God, the people grew tired of waiting. They made a golden calf and worshiped it. God was angry, but Moses prayed for the people, and God showed mercy. When we sin, we don't make excuses. We repent, turn back to God and tell Him the truth, and He forgives.
Repentance means owning our sin, saying sorry to God without excuses and turning back to Him. God is compassionate and gracious, and He forgives everyone who turns back to Him.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Christ Connection · Better than
Moses stood between God and the people and prayed for them. He even offered to be blotted out of God's book for them (Exodus 32:32), but God would not take Moses in their place. Jesus is the better Mediator (1 Timothy 2:5). He did take our place. He is our advocate with the Father and the payment for our sins (1 John 2:1-2).
Hebrews 3:3; 1 Timothy 2:5; 1 John 2:1-2
The Big Story · Fall
Sin pulls our hearts away from God toward things we make. God didn't give up on His people. He sent Moses to pray for them, and later He sent Jesus, who did more than pray. He gave His life to take our sin away.

Weeks after promising to obey, Israel traded the living God for a calf they made. God was right to judge them, but Moses stood in the gap and prayed, and God relented. Aaron blamed the people and the fire, but true repentance owns sin fully. God answered with mercy, rewrote His law and revealed His name, pointing ahead to Jesus, the Mediator who took our place.
