Fire falling from heaven onto Elijah's soaked stone altar on Mount Carmel while the crowd falls to the ground in awe.

Christ Connection · God’s character

On Mount Carmel, God showed He is the living God, unlike idols that cannot see, hear or answer. The New Testament calls people to turn "from idols to serve the living and true God." Jesus came to make that living God known and to bring wandering hearts back to Him.

1 Thessalonians 1:9; Hebrews 12:28-29; James 5:17-18

The Big Story · Redemption

When Israel turned to the false god Baal, God sent His prophet Elijah to call them back. The fire on Carmel showed that the LORD alone is God. Jesus came to turn every wandering heart back to the living God.

Bible story 6 min

God's people stopped worshiping God. They prayed to a fake god named Baal. So God stopped the rain for more than three years!

Then God's prophet Elijah called everyone to Mount Carmel. He said, "Stop going back and forth! If the LORD is God, follow Him!" Elijah said, "Let's have a test. The God who sends fire is the real God."

The 450 men of Baal put wood and a gift on their altar. They yelled, "Baal, answer us!" They danced and shouted all day long. But nothing happened. No one answered.
