The Joy of the LORD: Ezra Reads God's Word
Nehemiah 8:1-18 Old Testament PrincipleJoy

After God's people came home from exile and rebuilt Jerusalem's wall, they all gathered in the square by the Water Gate. They asked Ezra to bring the Book of the Law of Moses. Ezra read God's Word aloud from early morning until noon, and the Levites helped everyone understand it. When the people heard it, they wept. But the leaders said, "Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." The people went home to eat, drink and share food with those who had nothing, and they celebrated with great joy because they understood God's Word.
Joy is deep gladness that comes from God. Knowing God through His Word gives us joy that is stronger than our circumstances, and joy overflows into sharing with others.

Christ Connection · Need
God's Law showed the people their sin, and they wept. The Law still shows us that we need a Savior. Jesus kept the Law perfectly and died for our sin, so God's Word now brings us joy. Jesus said, "I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you."
Romans 3:20-24; Luke 24:27, 44-45; John 15:11
The Big Story · Redemption
God brought His people home from exile just as He had promised. When His Word was opened, they saw their sin, but God turned their tears to joy, a picture of the joy He gives through Jesus, who fulfills every word of the Law.

God brought His people back home, and they rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem. Then everyone came together and asked Ezra to read God's Word. Ezra read from early morning until noon, and helpers explained it so all the people could understand. At first the people cried, because they saw they had not obeyed God. But the leaders said, "Do not be sad. The joy of the LORD is your strength!" The people ate, shared food with others and were full of joy because they understood God's Word.

Bible story 6 min
God's people had been far away from home for a long time. Then God brought them back. They built up the wall around their city. Now they were home!
One day, all the people came together. Moms, dads and kids filled the big open place by the gate. "Ezra, bring out God's book!" they said.
Ezra was a man who loved God's Word. He stood up on a tall, wood stage. He opened the scroll. All the people stood up!

When the people of Jerusalem finished the wall, they gathered "as one man" and asked Ezra to read the Book of the Law. For six hours they stood and listened, while the Levites explained it so everyone understood. The Law exposed their sin, and they wept. But their leaders declared the day holy and said, "Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." The people feasted, sent portions to the poor and rejoiced "because they now understood the words." God's Word, rightly understood, leads through honest sorrow to deep joy.
