The king of Rome said, "Everyone must go to their hometown to be counted." So Joseph and Mary walked a long way to Bethlehem. That was the town of King David.
Bethlehem was full. There was no room for them. While they were there, Mary had her baby boy. She wrapped Him in cloths and laid Him in a manger, where animals eat.
That night, shepherds were in the fields with their sheep. Suddenly a shining angel came! The shepherds were scared. The angel said, "Do not be afraid! I bring you good news of great joy! A Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord! You will find Him lying in a manger."
