The Church Begins · Lesson 9

Peter Escapes Prison

Acts 12:1-19; Exodus 12:11 New Testament PrinciplePrayer

In a dark prison cell, a shining angel wakes Peter as the chains fall from his wrists while two soldiers sleep.

King Herod put Peter in prison, chained between soldiers. The church prayed hard for him, and God sent an angel to lead Peter out. When Peter knocked at the door, the praying friends could hardly believe it!

God loves to hear His children pray, and He is able to do more than we expect. We can bring every need to Him.

Memory verse

“So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was fervently praying to God for him.”

Christ Connection · God’s character

The church prayed, and God rescued Peter in Passover week, the same way He once rescued Israel. Jesus Himself "always lives to intercede" for His people (Hebrews 7:25), so we never pray alone. God is able to do "immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine" (Ephesians 3:20).

Acts 12:5-11; Hebrews 7:25; Ephesians 3:20

The Big Story · Redemption

God has always rescued His people, from Egypt to the prison in Jerusalem. He hears their prayers, and one day He will set every captive free forever.

Ask, "What's the hardest thing to get out of?" Let kids guess (a locked room, a knot). Say, "Today Peter is locked up with chains and soldiers. The only thing his friends can do is pray. Is that enough?"

Bible story 6 min

King Herod did not like Jesus' followers. He put Peter in jail. Sixteen soldiers guarded him!

But the church prayed for Peter. They prayed and prayed to God.

The night before Peter's trial, he was sleeping. He was chained between two soldiers. More guards stood at the door.
