Seeing God's World · Lesson 4

Test Everything

Acts 17:10-12; Genesis 2:16-17; Genesis 3:1-6; 1 Thessalonians 5:21 New Testament PrincipleWisdom

Paul teaching in the Berean synagogue while eager listeners unroll scrolls to check what he says.

When Paul taught in Berea, the people listened eagerly, then checked everything he said against the Scriptures every day. In the garden, Eve didn't know God's word well and listened to the serpent instead. God gives wisdom to test everything we hear by His Word.

God's Word is the measuring stick for every idea. Wise people listen eagerly, test carefully and hold on to what's true.

Adam and Eve were tested in a beautiful garden and believed the lie. Jesus was tested in a wilderness, hungry and alone, and answered every lie with "It is written" (Matthew 4:4). Where we fail the test, Jesus passed it for us, and in Him "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3).

Matthew 4:1-11; Colossians 2:2-8; Hebrews 4:15

The Big Story · Redemption

The Fall began with a twisted version of God's word. Ever since, God's people have needed to test every message by what God has really said, and Jesus, the Word made flesh, shows us the truth perfectly.

The people of Berea listened to Paul, then checked God's Word every day to see if it was true. God gives us wisdom to test what we hear by His Word.

Say, "I am 100 years old!" Ask, "Is that true? How could you check?" Say, "Today we learn about people who checked everything with God's Word!"

Bible story 6 min

Long ago, in a garden, a sly snake talked to Eve. "Did God really say that?" he asked. Eve did not remember God's words just right. She believed the snake. That was a sad day.

Many years later, Paul and Silas came to a town called Berea. They went to the synagogue. Paul told the people, "Jesus died and rose again. God's Word said He would!"

The people loved to hear it! But they said, "Let's check God's Word to see if it is true." So every day, they read the scrolls. They looked and looked.

  1. Teach motions for the three questions. Point out for "Who says it?" Tap your head for "How do they know?" Open your hands like a book for "What does God's Word say?"
  2. Say a claim ("A cat told me it's going to rain," "The Bible says God loves you," "This candy makes you fly"). Kids do the motions, then shout "True!" or "Not true!"
