Seeing God's World · Lesson 5
Made in God's Image
Genesis 1:26-31; Psalm 139:1-18; James 3:9-10 Old Testament PrincipleThankfulness

God made people in His own image, male and female, different from everything else He made. David praised God because he was "fearfully and wonderfully made." Every person's worth comes from God, so we thank Him for how He made us and treat every person with respect.
God made me on purpose, in His image. My worth comes from Him, so I can thank Him for how He made me and honor everyone He made.

Christ Connection · Better than
Sin smudged God's image in us, but it never erased it. Jesus is "the image of the invisible God" (Colossians 1:15), the perfect picture of what God is like and what a human was meant to be. Through Jesus, God is renewing His image in His people (Colossians 3:10), making us more like His Son (Romans 8:29).

The Big Story · Creation
In creation, God made people in His image to know Him and care for His world. Sin damaged that image, but Jesus, the perfect image of God, came to restore it.

Bible story 6 min
In the beginning, God made the world. He made light and land and seas. He made fish, birds and bugs. Then on day six, God did something new.
God said, "Let Us make people in Our image." So God made people to be like Him in special ways. They could think and love and talk with God. He made them male and female. He made boys and girls. God looked at all He made. It was very good!
Many years later, a king named David wrote a song. He sang, "God, You know me! You know when I sit and when I stand. You made me before I was born. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made!"

Every human being is made in the image of God, male and female, as God's living representatives in His world. That gives every person dignity that can't be earned or lost. Sin has smudged the image, but Jesus, the perfect image of God, restores it. Gratitude, not comparison, is the right response.
