Stay Connected: Jesus Is the Vine

John 15:1-17; Isaiah 5:1-7; Psalm 80:8-11 New Testament PrincipleFaithfulness

Jesus stands among grapevines at evening, holding a branch heavy with grapes as His disciples gather close.

Jesus said He is the vine and we are the branches. A branch can't grow fruit by itself; it stays connected to the vine, and the vine's life flows into it. When we stay close to Jesus, He grows love, joy and faithfulness in us.

Jesus is the faithful vine, and His life flows into everyone joined to Him. Because He holds on to us, we can stay close to Him day by day, and He grows good fruit in us.

Memory verse

“I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.”

John 15:5 BSB

The Big Story · Redemption

God planted His people like a vine, but sin made the fruit sour. Jesus came as the true vine, and everyone joined to Him by faith receives His life and grows fruit that lasts, until the day the whole world is His garden.

Start here

Go on a quick branch hunt outside with paper bags. Find a fallen twig and a branch still growing on a tree or bush. Feel them both. Ask, "Which one is alive? How can you tell? What's the difference?" Say, "Jesus told His friends something important about branches."

Bible story 6 min

It was the night before Jesus died on the cross. Jesus was with His friends. He wanted to tell them some very important things.

Jesus said, "I am the true vine. My Father is the gardener."

A vine is the big stem of a grape plant. Branches grow out from it. The vine sends water and food into the branches. Then the branches grow grapes.

Branch hunt 8 min

You’ll need: Paper lunch bags, Magnifying glasses

  1. On the branch hunt, kids collect a dead twig in their bag and look closely at a living branch still on the tree.
  2. Back inside, compare them with magnifying glasses. Bend them gently. The dead twig snaps. The living branch bends.
  3. Ask, "What makes the living branch different?" (It's still connected!)
