Back to School Bible Lessons for Kids

Five Bible stories about learning, listening and wisdom for the start of a new school year.

A new school year is full of new teachers, new friends and a lot to learn. These five lessons show kids that real wisdom starts with God: a boy who learned to listen to His voice, a king who asked for wisdom, Jesus Himself as a boy asking questions in the temple, a young man who learned God's Word from his mom and grandma, and a house built on the rock.

Twelve-year-old Jesus sits among the teachers in the temple courts, listening and asking questions.

Questions

What Bible stories are good for back to school?

Stories about learning and wisdom: God calling young Samuel (1 Samuel 3), Solomon asking God for wisdom (1 Kings 3), twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple (Luke 2:41-52), Timothy learning the Scriptures from childhood (2 Timothy 3:14-15) and the wise and foolish builders (Matthew 7:24-27). Each one is a full lesson here.

What ages are these back to school lessons for?

Preschool through 6th grade. Every lesson comes in four versions (Preschool, K–2nd, 3rd–4th and 5th–6th grade) with one Teacher Guide, so you can teach mixed ages from the same story.

Can I use these to start a homeschool year?

Yes. They're written so a parent can teach them at the kitchen table, and they make a good first week for a homeschool Bible time.

Are the lessons free?

The lessons are included in a Teach Them Jesus membership. You can try a full lesson for free, and our coloring pages and other printables are free for everyone.
