Mother's Day Bible Lessons for Kids

Five Bible stories about moms, grandmas and the women who cared for God's children.

The Bible is full of mothers and grandmothers who trusted God: a mom who prayed for a baby, a mom who hid her son in a basket on the Nile, a daughter-in-law who wouldn't leave Naomi, a widow who trusted God to save her sons, and a mom and grandma who taught Timothy the Scriptures. In every story, God is the One who cares for His children, and these women point kids to Him.

Hannah prays with tears at the doorway of the house of the LORD at Shiloh while old Eli the priest watches.

Teach Hannah Prays on Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May, and the others in the weeks around it. Not every child has a mom at home; Ruth and Naomi and Timothy's grandma show kids that God puts many kinds of caring people in our lives.

Questions

What Bible stories are good to teach on Mother's Day?

Stories of mothers and grandmothers who trusted God: Hannah praying for a son (1 Samuel 1), Moses' mother hiding him in a basket (Exodus 2), Ruth staying with Naomi (Ruth 1–4), the widow whose jar of oil kept pouring (2 Kings 4) and Timothy's mother Eunice and grandmother Lois (2 Timothy 1:5). Each one is a full lesson here.

How do I teach Mother's Day lessons to kids who don't have a mom at home?

These lessons keep God at the center, not mothers alone. Ruth and Naomi and Timothy's grandma show that God gives children many people who love them, so every child can thank God for the people who care for them.

What ages are these lessons for?

Preschool through 6th grade. Every lesson comes in four versions (Preschool, K–2nd, 3rd–4th and 5th–6th grade) with one Teacher Guide.

Are the lessons free?

The lessons are included in a Teach Them Jesus membership. You can try a full lesson for free, and our coloring pages and other printables are free for everyone.
